With Florida recently announcing that crime rates have dropped to a historic low, the numbers are something to celebrate. However, with law enforcement switching over to new ways of reporting statistics this should be considered as incomplete! Experts warn us not jump too quickly on deducing hopeful conclusions from these promising figures until further decomposed analysis is done. Of all 404 departments in Florida, 239 representing 57.5% of its population provided statistics for this report. Even as Florida law enforcement makes the shift to a new FBI-created system the report is combining multiple years from agencies that use the older methodology.
“I would say these are provisional data and should be treated with some caution,” said Richard B. Rosenfeld, a criminologist and professor emeritus at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
